  CHAPTER 1

  Zoey

  Is that a fucking hand on my ass?

  Oh. My. God. I hear boys laughing behind me. My first day of college and some jerk thinks he’s still back in high school. I was looking forward to leaving all this sophomoric behavior behind, but it looks like a change of scenery hasn’t brought about any change in the boys.

  I’m here to learn, not to get drunk at fraternity parties and have random hook-up sex with a semisoft cock at four in the morning in some guy’s dorm. I worked hard for this scholarship and I have to continue working hard, or they’ll take it away. If I can’t maintain a 3.5 GPA then the scholarship is revoked and everything comes out of my pocket. A pocket which rarely has more than $20 in it at a time.

  New chapter in my life. Same old boy problems.

  My body fills with rage, but my head warns me not to lose my cool. Should I turn around and sock this guy in the face? Maybe a knee to the nuts would be better. I can’t allow this on day one, or it’s only going to get worse, along with my reputation. ‘Yeah, that’s her. Doughy Zoey…with the fat ass ripe for grabbing.’ Fuck, why is this happening all over again?

  “Ooooh shit!” I hear a voice a few yards down the hall yell.

  I brace myself for what’s next and turn just in time to see books flying everywhere and a boy lifted off the ground and slammed into the wall…by his neck. Holy fuck, what’s happening?

  “Apologize,” the man who has him pinned against the wall demands. The man’s back is turned to me, but I can hear his words. Who couldn’t? His deep voice echoes through the hallways, sending a chill up my spine. I’ve gone from super pissed off to super turned on in under three seconds thanks to Mr. Mystery Man.

  “I-I-I’m sorry, sir,” the boy says. His back to the wall. His face looking down and away from the man holding him there. And by there I mean a full six inches off the ground. His feet are literally dangling.

  Mystery Man has his right hand firmly in place just below his windpipe. It’s like a modified choke hold, but it’s full on scaring the shit out of Mister Grab Ass.

  “Not to me, son,” Mystery Man says. “To that young woman you just assaulted.”

  “I’m so sorry. It will never happen again,” he chokes out. His face becoming redder.

  “You’re damn right it won’t,” Mystery Man said. He slowly lowered the boy to the ground, each slow agonizing inch of his descent reminding him just who was in control. Control of whether he walked away with little more than his ego bruised and short of breath, or with a whole lot of bones crushed or even worse.

  The boy wouldn’t make eye contact with the man, but I couldn’t take my eyes off him. I was watching a real life version of Animal Planet. The ones where the beta males do everything they can to avoid upsetting the alpha. And hot damn, alpha he was.

  He was well over six feet, with short dark hair. He wore a white dress shirt and slacks. A black belt cut his body into two distinct sections, not that he needed a belt to define his physique.

  His shirt was just tight enough that you could see his muscles flexing, but just loose enough to not look like a guy who’s trying to show off all the hours he spent in the gym. But this guy didn’t look like a guy who puts himself in weird positions pumping huge plates in the section of the gym that the bodybuilders with their overly reddish skin and weight belts dominated. He looked more natural, more rugged. Even from behind I could tell he was different.

  But there was something about him that looked familiar. My eyes narrowed as my brain tried to remember if, and where, I’d seen this guy before.

  Mystery Man stared at the boy, watching him as he hurriedly grabbed up his books before scurrying down the hallway like the little rat he was. What a display of power. Jesus, was I getting wet?

  It was no longer a matter of if I was getting wet, it was just a matter of how much. Another couple seconds and everyone was going to be able to see. But before anyone saw anything, I had to see this guy’s face. And just like the way he stepped in for me and defended my honor, he
didn’t disappoint.

  He slowly turned his massive shoulders in my direction to face me.

  Oh. My. God.

  “Mr. Bryant?”

  CHAPTER 2

  Luke

  If there’s one thing I can’t tolerate it’s guys taking advantage of their size and strength to bully people…especially women.

  When I saw that little shit grab that girl’s ass out of the corner of my eye it was never a question of whether or not he was going to pay for it, only how much.

  He’s lucky as hell we’re in a civilized setting. On the battlefield he would have gotten laid the fuck out. I would have made sure of it. Real men don’t act that way, and when some douche bag does it’s a real man who puts him back in his place. He can consider what I did a very gentle and friendly reminder of that fact.

  Not only did he embarrass that poor girl, but he embarrassed himself. Only problem is he’s not mature enough to see that. He thought he could get some laughs from his little buddies, but who’s laughing now?

  I would never condone what he did. Never in a million years, but at least the dummy had enough sense to pick out the girl with the nicest ass. When I heard the slap, my head spun just in time to see his hand firmly planted on her ass. And what an ass it was. It took me back to one of my favorite songs from back in the day. The one that everyone was singing and showed this white boy what butts were all about. “Baby Got Back.” And damn did she.

  But this wasn’t about her amazing curves and the way she carried herself. Yes, in that short moment I had noticed. It’s my job to analyze people quickly. Size them up and make judgements. Judgements which people live and die by.

  Her posture was alert and responsive. She didn’t have prim and proper stick in her ass posture, but she wasn’t a slouch either. She carried herself with a certain calmness, a certain wisdom for her years. She was alone, which meant she may or may not be a loner, or maybe it was just her first year. A freshman.

  She was dressed well, but not revealing. I was more than attracted to her already and that was just from a split second look I got of her from behind.

  Now I was intrigued. Now I had to know. Who was this mystery girl with the big juicy ass hot enough that some boy was willing to risk his life for just for a touch?

  I had to see her face. Had to know what she looked like.

  I turned and our eyes locked.

  Is that?…Zoey.

  CHAPTER 3

  Zoey

  Oh my, God. Mr. Bryant?”

  I couldn’t believe it was him. It was literally impossible. Impossible. He was off fighting battles in the far reaches of the globe. He was never home, let alone back in the States, and at some college. And not just some college. My college.

  “Zoey, wow. I’d ask if that’s really you, but of course I’d recognize you anywhere.”

  And I’d recognize him. Who couldn’t. Tall, ruggedly handsome, and a stare that could penetrate walls…if it wasn’t busy melting my panties at the moment.

  It was him. In the flesh. I still couldn’t believe it. My emotions were on a roller coaster ride. An ass slap, a display of dominance, and now my forever and a day crush? What in the hell was going on?

  “Thank you,” was all I could say. My lips didn’t even move to say the words. The fell out more than I spoke them.

  “You’re welcome. What are you doing here?”

  “I’m starting college. What are you doing here?”

  He smirked. God, he was so sexy. He let a moment pass, just staring at me. Our eyes locked. His conveyed confidence, calm, and a sense of humor at the irony of it all. Mine, I wasn’t really sure, but I could sure guess. I couldn’t hide my desire for him after what he’d just done. I’d always wanted him, but I’d done my very best to keep it a secret. After this display, keeping that secret was going to get a lot harder, but hopefully a lot less necessary.

  I had wanted him for so bad the last few years. I had always seen pictures of him at our house. It was like I knew his entire life just through the pictures we had of him. My father revered and admired him. He was the bigger brother he never had. He spoke so fondly of him that my mom often joked of their bromance. Mr. Bryant always brushed it off, but I could see that it was real.

  He just had this way about him. He inspired people. He made people feel safe. And he made girls turned on like they’d never been turned on before.

  One look at him brought out that primal desire from deep within. It was like it woke girls up. Whenever I had friends over they were quick to ask who the sexy soldier in the pictures was. I told them he wasn’t a soldier. They always looked at me funny at that comment. They always said the same thing. ‘But he’s in camouflage in the middle of some desert, holding a gun. What do you mean he’s not a soldier.’ It just made me smile. ‘He’s not just a soldier. He’s a lot more than that. He’s a SEAL.’

  SEAL. He was a Navy SEAL. One of the guys you never see, only hear about. Once in a while a headline pops up in your news feed. The word SEAL in all capitals catches your attention. The word SEAL always followed by some act of bravery in support of our country. It didn’t surprise me in the least that he had stood up for me. It made sense now. He probably didn’t even know it was me. Ironically it turned me on even more. What he did was engrained in him. It was in his blood. As much as I wanted to fantasize that he knew it was me and swooped in to rescue me, that wasn’t the case. He’d rescue any girl. Anyone in need. Anyone fighting a battle that was a little too big to take on themselves.

  It was what he stood for. It was what he did. It was who he was.

  Just thinking about it made me want to run up and jump on him right now. Those big muscles catching me in mid air as my body crashed into him. He could push me up against that wall all right. Take me right then and there. I wouldn’t even complain if he put his hand at the base of my throat like he did that boy. Choke me lightly.

  That’s what I wanted. I wanted to feel alive. To feel him. First he’d made me made me feel by his actions. Second he made me feel just from his look. For lucky number three, I wanted to feel from his touch.

  And it was going to take a whole, whole, whole lot of luck for that to happen. He was off limits. My dad would lose it. It would crush him. I couldn’t do that to my dad, but the longer he stood there looking at me the more my mind worked overtime trying to think of ways this just might work.

  “I’m starting college too,” he said.

  I cocked an eyebrow, still unsure of what was going on. “But I thought you were off fighting wars all over the planet?”

  “Not anymore. That chapter of my life recently ended. I’m starting a new chapter now. Here.”

  This was getting better by the second. Was he going to be around now? I might actually get to know him more than just what I’ve seen and heard from my dad and in pictures. More than just the times he was home on leave, enjoying a burger in our backyard.

  “That’s really great, Mr. Bryant. So you’re going back to school to get your degree. That’s very cool.”

  He smirked again. Damn, he was so sexy when he did that.

  “Not exactly back to school. I never really started.”

  “Oh. So a brand new student. Just like me.” Hello study buddies. I could already picture late nights solving problems, and then solving each other. He could tutor me on the art of female pleasure and everything I’d missed out on all those years while I had my nose buried deep inside books.

  “Not exactly that either,” he said. I shot him a confused look and he pointed down at the books still in his left hand. Oh my, God. I hadn’t even noticed, but he’d had those books in his hand the whole time. I knew he lifted that boy with one arm, but he literally didn’t even set his books down. What a stud.

  “I’m here to teach.”
