  “There are some horse properties further up. We can go take a look.”

  Sunset was approaching. The air was still warm. I could ride without a jacket.

  We arrived at the end of the road. I idled the bike.

  We slowly rode down the dirt path. I wanted to go slow not to kick up too much dirt or any rocks that may have found their way onto the path. My bike was everything. Had to treat her right. No scratches or dings.

  At the end of the path she tapped me on the shoulder. I pulled over. We got off the bike. She handed me my helmet back.

  “Well. I must say I wasn't expecting such an amazing day when I sat down to do math homework at the coffee shop. What an amazing and pleasant surprise.”

  “Yeah. I got more than I expected as well.”

  “Great. I hope I was able to keep up.”

  “I do like to live life in the fast lane. Talking fast included. I don’t even form complete sentences most of the time. It’s just how I’m used to communicating now. But today was more about listening. It was a fun conversation.”

  “Pete.”

  “Wow, I was having so much fun and everything was so natural I never got your name.”

  “Yeah. You're right. Everything just flowed naturally. We skipped right past all the formalities. I like it that way.”

  “Me too. I wish it was that way more often. If only people could be more straightforward. Be who they are, and not try and represent something they aren't. Everybody would be happier and things would work out better.”

  “Agreed. OK, time for me to go. And just enough time for you to get home before the sun goes down. Don't want some big, scary animal grabbing you up and dragging you into the woods this late in the day.”

  “Very funny. Aren't you going to ask my name?”

  “I already know your name.”

  “You don't know my name.”

  “Wanna bet?”

  “I don't bet, but yeah. I'll make an exception in this case.”

  “Okay, I get it right you have to write to me when I'm gone.”

  “Where are you going?”

  “I’m in the Marines. I get sent to strange corners of the globe. Sometimes for long chunks of time.”

  “You're joking me.”

  “I'm not. I leave tomorrow morning.”

  “Forever?”

  I wasn't sure what to say. I wanted to see this girl again. Needed to see her again. I had never felt this way about a girl before.

  “Forever is a long time. Plus my mom is living around here so of course I'll be back. I get thirty days of paid leave a year. That plus the seventy-twos and ninety-sixes and other perks. It adds up quick.”

  “What’s a seventy-two?”

  “Three-day vacation. Seventy-two hours to do whatever I want.”

  “Wow. That is really intense. How long have you been in?”

  “Fifteen years now. Sixteen if you count the year I was in the Delayed Enlistment Program. But that year doesn’t count for much. It’s more just a promise to the Corps that you belong to them.”

  “I think I’ve heard of that Delayed Enlistment Program.”

  “It’s popular. If you’re under eighteen you have to get a parent’s signature. My mom had to co-sign way back then.”

  “Co-sign? Sounds like you are taking out a loan.”

  “You are. In the Marines your days are on loan. You never know if the next one will be your last. One day at a time. Just enjoy each one. Like what we did today.”

  She looked at me deeply. It was like she was looking into my soul. Beyond the bad boy exterior. She saw something more. I was already a supremely confident g

  “And if you don't guess my name. What do I get?”

  “That's for you to decide.”

  “OK. If I win I want to cut off a little piece of your hair right now.”

  “What? What kind or weird, sick stuff are you into?”

  She smiled. Holding in laughter as long as she could. Finally a little laugh that couldn't be held back snuck out.

  “I'm not. If you’re going back to the Marines then you’re going to have all your hair chopped off in less than twenty-four hours anyways. And you smell really good. It's a masculine scent. Your scent. But mixed with a hint of sunscreen.”

  “Now you're really scaring me. So when I leave you're going to patent a new kind of sunscreen cologne. Pete's Summer Breeze. I can see it now. A best seller. But what else? You want one of my kidneys to sell on the black market?”

  “Very funny. A bet's a bet. If you don't agree we can call it off.”

  “I don't back down. It's a deal. But just so you know I don’t cut my hair. I have a unique position within the Marines that requires me to blend in with civilians.”

  “Oh, so we shouldn’t do this then.”

  “We definitely should. I prefer the stakes to be higher. Just like this.”

  “Okay then. What's my name?”

  “Snoop Dooooggy Doooooog.”

  “Hardy, har, har. That is a good song though. One guess for real. You miss and Macy's will be stocking Pete's Summer Breeze in time for Christmas.”

  “Okay, let me think. You don't look like a Nataliya.”

  “Nataliya? Why don't I look like a Nataliya?”

  “Because Nataliyas look like Russian spies. That's the rule. Don't you watch movies?”

  “You're crazy. Hot. But crazy.”

  “Hmmm. You don't look like an Esmeralda.”

  “Where in the world are you coming up with these?”

  “I have a vivid imagination.”

  “As I can tell. This is going to take forever.”

  “No it's not, Emily.”

  She took a step back. Her eyes opened wide.

  “Oh my God. How did you know?”

  “I can just tell.”

  “Are you serious?”

  “Yes, Emily Fulbright.”

  “OK, you're scaring me now.”

  “It was written on your school book.”

  “Geez. How did I not think of that?”

  “Yeah me too. So we will write each other?”

  “Yes. If you can give me your address I promise the first letter when I get settled in to who knows where. Be on the lookout for a cool postmark.”

  “Thanks. That's really sweet of you.”

  She pulled out a pen and wrote her address in her notebook. Carefully she removed half the page and handed it to me.

  “Great. I didn't know this street even had a name.”

  “It doesn't. Yet. My dad's developing this area so he can name stuff pretty much whatever he wants. Now I can tell him I already gave out our address as “Eagle Rock Way” so he'll have to stick with that name.”

  “You should study law. You negotiate in a way that leaves the opposition no other choice.”

  “Thanks. I want to be a strong woman one day. I mean, I think I'm already pretty level-headed and I go for what I want, but I want to do really great things with my life.”

  I was hooked. This girl was not only beautiful on the outside, but equally so on the inside. She had the drive and determination to make the world hers, but in an elegant way. Determined and gritty are often used to describe successful guys, but she definitely represented these two traits and there was not a single thing about her that didn't scream woman. Incredible young woman.

  “I know you will be. I have to go now, but wait. I have something for you.”

  I reached up under my bike's gas tank and felt for it. Good, it was there. It hadn't fallen out. I peeled back the duct tape and removed it. I took the blade in my right hand and about two inches of hair from the side of my head in my left and in one motion cut it clean.

  “Here you go.”

  “But you won.”

  “Today. We both won.”

  I reached out my left hand. She reached out her right. I placed the fresh cut hair into her hand. Feeling her palm with my fingertips one last time.

  I put on my helmet, zipped up my jacket, and took off down that dirt road. Eagle Rock Way.

  CHAPTER 2

  Emily

  I let myself in and made my way to my room. My dad was out somewhere so I had some time to myself. I Googled some information about Marines and Camp Pendleton. Mostly I just looked at pictures. I did read a few stories about the things they did though.

  I laid on my bed and stared at the ceiling thinking about everything that had just happened. Today was definitely a day of firsts. The first time I had been on a motorcycle. The first time a man had seen my bare breasts. The first time I had been on a horse. The first time I had really enjoyed myself on a date. And definitely the first time I’d ever spent any time with a man that could be the same age as my father.

  I laughed to myself realizing that we hadn’t even had an official date. It had been so wonderful in my mind that it had just become one in my recollection of the events. I’d only gone on a few dates before, but now that I was the “new girl” in town I was expecting that to change. The only problem was now, suddenly I wasn’t interested in dating. I was only interested in being with this one guy. Pete.

  I tried to write it off as just a crush on a guy who helped me out today. And he definitely did help me out with that annoying guy. Why were so many guys about my age that way? That guy said he graduated college last year so he must be at least twenty-two or twenty-three. What a cheesy pick up line. “Hi, I’m just on a break from my six figure job that I landed straight out of college last year.” Who says that kind of crap? Did he really think talking to me like I’m some money grubbing hooker was going to turn me on? Please.

  But Pete wasn’t that way at all. He was so respectful and gentle with me. Sure he had gotten aggressive up on the rock, but I liked it. I wanted him to take what he wanted, but my darn logical brain had kicked in. I shouldn’t be so analytical all the time. Then again, we had just met so I definitely made the right decision. And it wasn’t the way I imagined losing my virginity. It was a safe choice.

  But there was nothing safe about Pete. I imagined Pete doing the things those Marines in the pictures online did. He was a rough guy. Just the way he handled that boy showed me how strong he can be. He literally threw him, and the boy was too scared to even fight back after that. That’s the kind of guy I need in my life.

  But Pete will be gone soon. He’ll be off to some exotic country surrounded by beautiful girls. It’s not like he’ll tell them no. He’s a guy. That’s how guys are.

  It’s okay. I’m young. I’ve got my whole life in front of me. Sure, I’ll send him a few letters, but we’ll see if he even sends me letters back. I sure hope he does, and I’ll have my fingers crossed, but I don’t want to get my hopes up.

  Something about him tells me he’s different. He proved it today. Now let’s see if he proves it when he’s gone.

  Pete

  P ete, we're going to be late.”

  “Come on, mom. When you have a motorcycle you're never late.”

  “I know and that's what scares me. We're going to take my car. We have to anyways. I prepared some dishes.”

  “You cooked?”

  “Pete, you drop in for less than twenty-four hours at a time once in a while out of the blue. At least I’m going to try and feed you while you’re here.”

  “Thanks, mom, but don’t worry. I’m eating good.”

  “I can see that. My little boy has become quite the grown man. You must be at
tracting a lot of attention from the ladies these days. Met anyone special?”

  My entire life I’ve answered this never-ending question without a single thought. The “No, mom” is automatic. Not because I don’t want my mom prying, but because it’s true. I hate the idea of settling down, and that’s what most women want from me. At first they think what I do is cool, but of course they want me to quit and come live some boring life in the middle of nowhere. “It’s safer,” they always say. Nothing safe about tight hamstrings, a rounded back, and all the other health benefits that go with being a desk jockey. Screw that.
