  I shrug, trying to think but Sophie’s grin as she pumps the clutch and takes it up a gear tells me she has an idea.

  “And just where is your dad?” I hear myself ask, trying to pre-empt the next set of obstacles, even in my own plans with her alone.

  “Conference. Reno, Nevada, Two weeks,” she beams, and I feel myself easing back into the passenger seat as the car surges forward again.
